What is your editorial policy? What are your submission guidelines?
SportsFan Magazine's mission is to chronicle The Life and Times of America's Sports Fans. Where other sports magazines are celebrity-driven, we are fan-driven. If you have a story to share, we want to read it. There are just a few guidelines to keep in mind.
SFM focuses on sports fans, not sports stars. If you read an interview with an athlete or professional sports figure on our site, rest assured that person was chosen, in part, because of his or her deep connection with fans and contribution to fan culture. We are most interested in the experience of being a fan and all that entails.
SFM celebrates the life and times of all fans, regardless of race or gender. We strive, for example, to give women's sports and fans solid, unbiased coverage. In our prose we like to use, "he and she" rather than just the traditional "he."
SFM is dedicated to preserving the history of the sports we love. You'll often read about the great moments, players, and fans of yesteryear. SFM does not use corporate-bought names when referring to the fields, rinks, and stadiums. We believe corporate naming is just one more way that history is being erased, and a sneaky way of getting unpaid advertising into the body of editorial content. For example, it's the "arena in Washington," or "the arena on F St." or "the Phone Booth," rather than the MCI Center.
Unless it is an extraordinary situation, SFM does not allow the use of unnamed sources. If an unnamed source is required, the story must be cleared by the publisher. Much of our work is subjective, as we encourage our writers to put themselves in their articles; however when hard reporting is called for, that's what we give you: sources should be named, and multiple sources will be required in the rare case where they are not.
Finally, SFM takes its lead from our blithe mascot Peghead. When sports figures start taking themselves too seriously, or don't look out for fans first, we simply put one thumb in our left ear, the other in our right, stick our tongue out and give them a heaping spoonful of raspberry. Why? Because some things are too important to be taken seriously.
SportsFan Magazine accepts unsolicited submissions and we're always looking to add talented writers to our staff. Interested writers should contact James Patterson, our publisher, or Greg Wyshynski, Senior Editor.

At this time, we won't be forcing visitors to buy something, but we definitely appreciate your support. Somebody has to feed the monkey.

Who is Joe Fan?
Joe Fan is a hilarious sports cartoon, created by SportsFan Magazine Publisher James J. Patterson. Wes Johnson writes and illustrates Joe Fan, chronicling the bumbling exploits of the EveryFan.
Who is this "Peghead?"
Peghead is SportsFan Magazine's mascot. Unfortunately for Peghead, but luckily for us, during a simple operation, his head was replaced by a peg. He accompanies SportsFan Magazine staffers wherever we go, continually reminding us that some things are too important to be taken seriously. Peghead can be described in many ways, but most aptly can be characterized as a cross between a child suffering from fetal alcohol syndrome and a midget who has fallen into a vat of toxic waste.
I hate sports. What can SportsFan Magazine do for me?
We can help you help yourself. It's going to take time and possibly a bit of money, but there's hope for you, yet. Lowest valleys to appreciate the highest peaks and all that guff. Hey, don't worry, if the Cubs win the World Series this year, you're well on your way. |
