As SportsFan Magazine reported here, there was an impressive fan effort to vote a journeyman defenseman named Rory Fitzpatrick into the NHL All-Star Game. The Vancouver Canucks D-man was a write-in candidate, and at one point was second overall in the voting among Western Conference defenseman.

The final numbers will be released later today, but according to the Vancouver Sun, Fitzpatrick has fallen short of the fans' dream:
In the end, there weren't quite enough votes for Rory. Roberto Luongo, however, got more than enough.
When the NHL releases its final all-star voting results later today, Rory Fitzpatrick will not be among the top two vote-getters among Western Conference defencemen. That means Fitzpatrick won't have to make the difficult decision as to whether to go to Dallas later this month for the annual all-star game.
Luongo, meanwhile, will be named the starting goalie for the Western Conference.
"I've said all along I don't think I'll get in that top two," Fitzpatrick said Monday. "We'll wait and see what happens [today]."
Fitzpatrick insisted Monday he did not know where he placed in voting that wrapped up early last week. But a league source confirmed that Fitzpatrick did not finish in the top two.
The 31-year-old first-year Canuck was the subject of a hugely popular "Vote for Rory" grassroots campaign started by a Buffalo-area fan. Fitzpatrick has handled all the attention -- and some nasty criticism from the likes of Don Cherry and Wayne Gretzky that he clearly did not deserve -- with considerable class.
"It's been interesting; it's got a lot more attention than I ever expected it to get," Fitzpatrick said. "I was amazed. I think the first week I said I don't think we'll be here next week talking about it. Then next week there were twice as many people asking about it. It's amazing the power of the Internet and media to get that rolling to the extreme it got going."
The full story is here.
Is this truly the end? We won't know until the final tally. But there's no denying the power of the fans to push this effort right to the end.
